Courtship in g major - Kerry Dolan
She followed the fault lines fragmenting his face with her fingertips, a feature betraying foiled forays into foes’ fortresses for so long
to his big brown eyes, restful, for the few hours he obtains amidst a somnabulant sun: ever-morning, ever pushing him back to work
And away from her.
she is soft against him
urging him to press the snooze button just one more time
to taste a piece of the youth he so longs for
that lingers on her skin-
that he fought away a decade ago in embittered, long custody battles over deserted streets, dilapidated buildings, and dead youth
and yet, this living, breathing entity has ceded herself to him fully
and he finds himself at a loss.
his desire to conquer has subsided
the knowledge that she is his is enough to sustain him
until he again pursues the next ragged remains of reveries he nearly reached.
